Safety Workwear Shop supplies adapted work clothing and PPE to animal caretakers. Read more about tips to optimally protect your staff in the interview we just did with animal caretaker Sarah.
Interviewer: Can you tell us about a time when you had to ensure safety as a zookeeper?
Sarah: Yes, I remember one time when I was feeding the lions and noticed one of them behaving strangely. I knew this could be a sign of illness so I immediately notified the vet on duty.
Interviewer: What are some of the dangers animal caretakers face?
Sarah: According to official statistics, zookeepers face several hazards, including animal bites and scratches, exposure to zoonotic diseases, and ergonomic hazards of lifting and repetitive tasks. The most common injuries to zookeepers are bites and scratches, followed by sprains and strains.
Interviewer: What are some safety tips for zookeepers to follow?
Sarah: Here are five tips for staying safe at work:
-
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment including gloves, goggles and clothing appropriate for the task.
-
Practice good hygiene, such as washing hands regularly and following proper sanitation procedures to avoid exposure to zoonoses.
-
Be aware of animal behavior and learn to recognize signs of illness or distress. Report any concerns to your supervisor or the veterinarian on duty.
-
Use safe lifting techniques to avoid ergonomic injuries.
-
Receive proper training in animal handling and safety protocols. Follow regular safety training and refresher courses.
Interviewer: Thanks for sharing those tips. How did your quick thinking and dedication to safety affect the situation with the sick lion?
Sarah: Thanks for asking. The vet was able to diagnose and treat the lion's disease thanks to my quick thinking and training. Being attentive to details and prioritizing safety ensured that both me and the animals were safe on the job.
