What is the EN ISO 20471 Standard?
EN ISO 20471 is the European safety standard for high-visibility clothing that specifies the extent to which work clothing makes the wearer visible. This standard replaces the older EN 471 standard and sets strict requirements for fluorescent materials and retroreflective stripes. The standard classifies clothing into three classes (Class 1, 2 and 3) based on the minimum surface area of fluorescent material and retroreflective strips, with Class 3 offering the highest visibility for the most hazardous working conditions.

The Three Classes of EN ISO 20471 High Visibility Clothing
Class 1 High Visibility Clothing
Class 1 provides the minimum level of visibility and is suitable for lower risk situations. This clothing has a minimum of 0.14 m² of fluorescent material and 0.10 m² of retroreflective material. Typical Class 1 products are safety vests and trousers for use in areas with limited traffic or where the user is not working directly with moving equipment.
Class 2 (Class 2) High-visibility clothing
Class 2 offers a medium level of visibility, with a minimum of 0.50 m² of fluorescent material and 0.13 m² of retroreflective material. This class is ideal for working along roads with moderate traffic speeds or in moderate weather conditions. Popular Class 2 products include safety vests, T-shirts and work jackets.
Class 3 (Class 3) High visibility clothing
Class 3 offers the highest level of visibility, with a minimum of 0.80 m² of fluorescent material and 0.20 m² of retroreflective material. This clothing is required for high-risk work environments, such as along motorways, on construction sites with heavy traffic or in bad weather conditions. Class 3 products include complete sets, long coats and overalls that cover both the upper body and the legs.
